Richland County School District Two (Bethel-Hanberry School) Renovation

"I would like to commend DESA and its construction management team for the outstanding work they performed at Bethel-Hanberry Elementary School.  As a result of their efforts, our construction project was completed on time and was a success largely due to the attention we received from DESA." --Dr. Felix Figueroa, Principal, Bethel-Hanberry Elementary School

The Assignment:

Manage the renovation and construction of Bethel-Hanberry Elementary School which was originally built in 1954. The project included renovating classrooms and bathrooms, installing new HVAC systems for classrooms, enlarging the cafeteria, and adding two new kindergarten classrooms and walkway covers.

Challenges:

Students had to be relocated while classrooms were upfitted with new plumbing, HVAC and interior finishes.

How DESA Exceeded Expectations:

  • Temporary classrooms were used to house students. DESA worked closely with the school staff to develop a phasing plan to minimize disruption to the students.
  • The project was completed early, reducing the time that the portable classrooms were needed to 12 months.
  • Each phase of the renovation was scheduled to avoid critical testing dates and minimize impact to the kindergarten and first grade classes.
